What is the difference between Unix, Linux, and Windows hosting?

Dinohost servers use the Linux operating system. Linux is the most popular version of Unix and so they are basically the same thing. Now the main differences between Unix/Linux and Windows hosting are price, stability, and functionality. Unix/Linux hosting is a lot cheaper than Windows hosting because Linux software and licensing is a lot cheaper than Windows. The difference in stability of Unix/Linux and Windows servers is up to debate, but chances are if you used a Linux operating system on your personal computer, you will find that the OS is very stable when compared to most versions of windows. The main differences in functionality is that Unix/Linux is best for perl/cgi scripting while Windows is best when it comes to ASP. If ASP is a necessity for you, you would not want to use Unix/Linux based web hosting.

Note: One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to run Unix/Linux on your own computer in order for you to host your site on Unix/Linux platform. That is not true. Which operating system you run on your computer is irrelevant in making your decision. This means that if you are running Windows® 98, Windows® 2000, or Windows® XP on your computer, you can still choose Unix/Linux for your web hosting services. In addition, all web surfers will be able to view your site regardless of which operating system they are using.
